Autumnal Colors Field Trip

Posted on Updated on

Are you interested in going hiking with Cathy Harnisch & Carol Sullivan? Now’s your chance. I have looked at the weather and our schedules. We have decided to hike on Monday, October 14th.

The hike will be the Red Hill Trail in Moultonborough, NH. It is a 3+ mile hike out and back. With an approximate altitude gain of 1300 feet. There is a fire tower at the top if you so choose to climb it. There is a view of Lake Winnipesaukee from the top of the hill. If you climb the tower, there is a view of Squam Lake.

Trail Description from the Hiking Project Web Site.

This trail starts from the parking area off Red Hill Road and climbs moderately to the summit of Red Hill. Follow the red plastic diamonds (the color corresponds to the Lakes Region Conservation Trust map). The trail climbs a short distance, then dips over Snowmobile Corridor #201 (on the left and right). It climbs to a wooden fence, with a gap, then passes a cellar hole (on the left).

Here, part of the snowmobile trail meets the trail from the rear left. At the kiosk, Cabin Trail starts to the right and Red Hill Trail continues left. The trail ascends over an old rocky road to a spring on the left. This spring might be the one that was created for the caretakers when the tower was still in use. The trail reaches the summit of Red Hill at 1.8 miles.

What you will need:

  • Lunch, snacks and water
  • Good sturdy shoes. Hiking shoes are preferable but not requires for this hike.
  • A back pack of some form (just easier to carry your food)
  • Camera
  • Clothing for the weather predicted. (generally layers are best as I get warm going up and cool down while eating lunch.)
  • Hiking pole or trekking stick if you have one. (I have a couple extras)

Carol and I will have all the pertinent first aid stuff, the 10 essentials, extra water and snacks. We have both hiked this trail to many times to count. It’s a good beginner trail rated as moderate on various hiking pages.

We will meet at the Windham NH Park and Ride at 7:00 am. That should get us on the trail no later than 9:00 am. We will have lunch at the summit.

Once off the trail, we will then precede to Keepsake Quilting. We can decide as a group if we want to go to dinner or home from there. I cannot give you an exact end time, as I do not know how long it will take for everyone to climb then shop.

If you are interested, please e-mail me by Saturday October 12th. All future information will be via e-mail. I look forward to sharing my love of the outdoor with you.
